By giving students writing prompts, you let them be creative without carrying the burden of starting a piece of writing entirely from scratch.Try to use a different prompt every week or two to allow your students plenty of practice working through the writing process. W.9-10.2.a Introduce a topic; organize complex ideas, concepts, and information to make important connections and distinctions; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., figures, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.

That's a lot to ask of fifth graders and their teachers!
